When I am asked the age-old question of why adverse events befall virtuous people, it’s important for me to approach the question with a perspective that correlates with the teachings of the Urantia Book. The Urantia Book elucidates a comprehensive cosmology and theology, positing that the realm of human existence is part of a vast and intricate universe governed by divine laws and cosmic principles.
Jesus said: “My brother, God is love; therefore he must be good, and his goodness is so great and real that it cannot contain the small and unreal things of evil. God is so positively good that there is absolutely no place in him for negative evil. Evil is the immature choosing and the unthinking misstep of those who are resistant to goodness, rejectful of beauty, and disloyal to truth. Evil is only the misadaptation of immaturity or the disruptive and distorting influence of ignorance. Evil is the inevitable darkness which follows upon the heels of the unwise rejection of light. Evil is that which is dark and untrue, and which, when consciously embraced and wilfully endorsed, becomes sin.” (Urantia Book 130:1.5)
The Urantia Book puts a great deal of focus on the teaching of free will, asserting that mortal creatures possess the capacity to make choices that significantly impact their destinies. The consequences of individual and collective decisions, whether virtuous or otherwise, unfold within the course of life. In the exercise of free will, we can unwittingly contribute to the occurrence of events that may be perceived as adverse.
Additionally, the Urantia Book expounds upon the evolutionary nature of the world, teaching that it is a realm in the early stages of spiritual development. The growth of moral and spiritual values often transpires through the crucible of adversity. While the correlation between personal virtue and the occurrence of challenges may seem perplexing, it is posited that these tribulations serve as opportunities for spiritual growth, character development, and the cultivation of the ability to withstand certain events in life.
The fatherhood of God is central to understanding this apparent conundrum. The Urantia Book teaches that God is a loving and benevolent Parent, and that we are His spiritual children. Having this proper knowledge, we have a better understanding concerning the fact that divine love is manifested even in adverse times. The challenges encountered by good people are viewed as opportunities for spiritual advancement, drawing them closer to God and developing a deeper understanding of His fatherhood.
The brotherhood of humankind, another core tenet, shows how all of humanity is connected. Adverse events are not isolated occurrences but are events that make up our human experience. The actions and decisions of one person can reverberate across the entire human family, influencing the course of events for others. The Urantia Book provides a framework for comprehending such adverse occurrences in the lives of good people. Through the lenses of free will, evolutionary progress, the fatherhood of God, and the brotherhood of humankind, we can find solace in the understanding that even amidst adversity, there exists a purposeful and loving cosmic administration ultimately under God’s hands that guides our destinies and the evolution of the world.
Our Purpose in Life
In the pursuit of understanding one’s purpose in life, the teachings of the Urantia Book offer some very deep insights that invite serious contemplation and self-reflection. According to this grand revelatory book, the ultimate purpose of mortal existence is to achieve the highest possible spiritual attainment and to embark on the eternal journey of ascending to the presence of the Universal Father. This means that our purpose is to participate actively in God’s cosmic plan of spiritual evolution. We are considered ascending sons and daughters of God, engaged in a dynamic and purposeful journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. This ascent involves the cultivation of character, the acquisition of wisdom, and the development of a soul that persists beyond the temporal boundaries of earthly existence and above all the evil occurrences that take place on our planet.
Central to this purpose is the acknowledgment of the fatherhood of God. As mentioned earlier, the Universal Father lovingly bestows the gift of free will upon all of His children. This free will is the agency through which we can make choices that contribute to our spiritual growth and walk according to God’s purposes. By seeking to understand God’s will, we can discern and embrace our unique purpose within the divine plan.
The concept of the brotherhood of humankind is paramount in discerning our purpose. The connection between all human beings establishes a communal context for spiritual growth and service. Recognizing and maintaining the bonds of brotherhood involves extending compassion, love, and understanding to fellow human beings, thereby contributing to the collective upliftment of the entire human family.
Individual purpose encompasses personal growth, the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness, and the sincere desire to contribute positively to the well-being of others. Each of us is seen as a unique expression of God, and the journey of self-discovery is an ongoing process that unfolds throughout mortal life and beyond, despite the bad things we see or experience in life.
Our Focus
In contemplating the focus of human attention and endeavour, the teachings of the Urantia Book teach about a life changing perspective that helps us shift our focus from the vicissitudes of life to higher spiritual values and meaningful pursuits. Again, the central tenets of the Urantia Book, namely the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of humankind, provide us with a beautiful framework for guiding our focus toward more enriching and purposeful aspects of existence. The teaching about the fatherhood of God assists us to direct our attention to the Divine Source of all creation. Understanding God as a loving and benevolent Father helps us maintain a sense of spiritual connection, purpose, and security. In times of adversity, turning our focus towards the understanding that we are the beloved daughters and sons of a compassionate and caring Creator can provide solace and strength.
Jesus put focus on the importance of bringing our lives within the will of God. By focusing on the pursuit of spiritual values such as truth, beauty, and goodness, we can actively engage in the process of character development and moral growth. This will help us mould our decisions and actions in a manner that contributes to personal spiritual progress and the progress of others, as well as have a better grip on life when adverse occurrences take place.
The Urantia Book’s teaching of the brotherhood of humankind further directs attention towards relationships and the connection between all human beings no matter where they might live. Focusing on maintaining a good understanding, true compassion, and peaceful cooperation with fellow human beings helps us create an environment of mutual support and collective advancement. Having this knowledge, we are able to shift our focus from individual concerns to the broader context of contributing positively to the well-being of our fellow human beings.
We are also taught to pursue truth, intellectual growth, and the appreciation of beauty in all its various forms. These pursuits not only contribute to personal enrichment but also elevate the collective consciousness, creating an environment where all of us can collectively strive towards higher ideals in society and be able to overcome adversities.
Sharing Our Hope with Others
“The God-conscious mortal is certain of salvation; he is unafraid of life; he is honest and consistent. He knows how bravely to endure unavoidable suffering; he is uncomplaining when faced by inescapable hardship. The true believer does not grow weary in well-doing just because he is thwarted. Difficulty whets the ardour of the truth lover, while obstacles only challenge the exertions of the undaunted kingdom builder.” (156:5.20-21)
The realization that bad things can happen to good people and the pursuit of understanding one’s purpose in life often engender a deeply moving sense of empathy and a desire to help others obtain these truths. As we continue to embed the truths of the Urantia Book in our lives, the impulse to assist others in their spiritual journey becomes a natural outgrowth of these foundational principles.
One way to help others is by sharing the insights gained from understanding why adverse events occur in the lives of good people. By elucidating the truth about free will, spiritual growth through challenges, and the purpose of mortal existence, we can help others find meaning in their own experiences of hardship.
Assisting others in discovering their purpose in life involves creating an environment where people can explore their spiritual journey in this life. This could include engaging in thoughtful conversations, encouraging self-reflection, and providing support as others deal with the complexities of personal growth. Focusing on the importance of moulding our lives according to God’s divine plan and recognizing the connection of the human family can be instrumental in guiding others toward their purpose.
Promoting an a genuine understanding of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of humankind is a powerful way to develop compassion and unity. By focusing on the shared spiritual journey and the loving nature of God and Jesus, individuals can contribute to the creation of communities built on mutual support and understanding. This, in turn, helps others recognize the value of every single human being, helping us to adopt a sense of belonging. After all, we are all brothers and sisters and God is our Father.
Actively supporting others in their spiritual growth involves providing resources, guidance, and encouragement. This can include recommending literature, organizing study groups, or participating in discussions that truly dive into spiritual concepts and teachings of the Urantia Book, and especially the life and teachings of Jesus. Creating an environment where people can openly explore and deepen their understanding of spiritual truths contributes to their personal advancement.
“I am sending you out into the world to represent me and to act as ambassadors of my Father’s kingdom, and as you go forth to proclaim the glad tidings, put your trust in the Father whose messengers you are. Do not forcibly resist injustice; put not your trust in the arm of the flesh. If your neighbour smites you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. Be willing to suffer injustice rather than to go to law among yourselves. In kindness and with mercy minister to all who are in distress and in need.” (140:3.14)
Beyond imparting proper knowledge, engaging in practical acts of service exemplifies the principles of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of humankind. Acts of kindness, compassion, and service to others demonstrate the application of spiritual principles in everyday life. This tangible expression of love and goodwill can inspire and uplift those in need, helping create a sense of community and shared purpose.
